As an avid surfer I thought I would share some of my favourite exercises for surfers who are wanting to improve their performance.

Surfing is one of the hardest sports/activities to learn. At least that’s what I hear. I have no memory of learning to surf since I learnt before I could walk or run basically. I don’t even know how to teach someone because it just comes naturally to me.
Now I’m not saying you can’t do these if you never surf though! Or you can only do these exercises if your surfing- not at all. They will give your abs a workout for sure and improve your balance better than any other sport workouts.
If you have never surfed, before though I would say try it. It is a brutal sport at the beginning, but once you get it. You won’t stop.
And less we start the training.
Training program
Surfing requires strong shoulders and arms for paddling out to the waves. Core strength and balance are also key. If you aren’t in shape, the ocean will eat you up. Same with being a strong swimmer. Mind you you can build being a strong swimmer, you will start in calm waters then build up. I have a few exercises I’m going to share that are my favorite for training. But first and far most is just simple cardio. Swimming is my favorite cardio for surf training. But I will also jog just as much (swimming is really fun though).
Once you are on track for a strong cardio, you can move onto getting your body ready.
The first exercise is called Medicine ball jackknife
Holding a medicine ball with both hands, lie flat on your back with your legs straight and your arms extended past your head. Tighten your abs and slowly bring your legs and arms up at the same time until your body forms a V. Try to touch the ball to your feet without bending your legs. Build to three sets of 15 reps.

As seen here you can also put it between your legs for a step up.
There are many different variations of this exercise. If you don’t have that core strength it can hurt your back, in which you only want to do one leg at a time, or no medicine ball.
Often confused with the Swiss ball jackknife, which looks like this:

Our next move is Swiss ball pullover
Sit on a Swiss ball with your feet flat on the floor and a medicine ball in your hands. Slide forward on the ball and slowly lie down on it with thighs and torso parallel to the floor. Contract your abs to raise your torso as if you were throwing the ball. Build to three sets of 15.

One of my favorite things about this exercise, is if you can find a stone wall, or some thing to throw the ball at. Actually throw it. Or have someone stand there haha. Seen here:

Next move is Dumbbell flat rotation push
With a 24 lb dumbbell in each hand, lie flat on your back on a bench. Hold the weights next to your chest, with your palms facing your feet. Quickly press the weights up, extending your arms and rotating your hands to finish with your palms facing inward.
Pretty straight forward, common move. three sets of 15 reps.
Dumbbell Shoulder rotation
Stand with your feet shoulder width apart, knees slightly bent, and a 5 lb dumbbell in each hand. Raise your arms out to your sides at shoulder level and beginning moving your hands in slow, controlled circles. Do 20 circles, then switch directions for 20 minutes. Next, drop your arms to your sides and slowly swing your right arm back and over as if you were paddling. Do 20 reps, then repeat with left arm.
Medicine ball coil jump
Stand with your feet shoulder width apart and hold a medicine ball in both hands. Extend your arms so the ball is straight overhead. Bend your knees slightly, then explode upward, bringing your knees up toward your chest as your jump. Try to land softly and spring back up as fast as you can. Build to three sets of 15 reps.
And finally my favorite the Indo board and or Holoholo board

Ask any surfer, they have spent days and days on one of these. I will spend probably about 30 minutes a day or at the end of my workout on it.
A lot of surfing involves your whole body. People do it to clear their mind, because you get out there you focus on that and only that. you forget anything else happening and just surf. Another big portion is eating. When I go out for a surf, I eat probably 5 meals a day. Especially when I get back in I fuel fuel fuel.
There are tons and tons of exercises for surfing. And LOTS to learn. You can even go to a lot of training centers and they will have workouts devoted to surfers. Which is what I do, and it works magic. also really fun.
A great site I use is surfstronger.com
Look into it, and if you need any more information or have a question don’t hesitate to ask!
And one final note: If you are not interested in surfing, or it seems to daunting try stand up paddle boarding. Not only is it a killer workout, it’s really really fun and a great way to enjoy this pretty place.
Happy surfing!
